Welcoming a newborn into the family is a precious moment worth capturing. Proper preparation for a newborn portrait session ensures beautiful and timeless photos that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Capture Those Precious Newborn Moments: A Guide to Your Session

So you've welcomed a beautiful bundle of joy into the world, congratulations! Now you want to capture those fleeting newborn moments with stunning photographs. But where to start? This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to prepare for your newborn photography session.

Booking and Timing:

  • Ideally, contact your photographer during your second trimester to get on their calendar.
  • Newborns are sleepiest (and therefore most poseable) within the first 7-10 days of life, so aim for a session during this window.

What to Expect:

  • Relax! Newborn sessions are all about capturing those natural moments.
  • Be prepared for messes. Poop happens, and photographers are pros at handling it discreetly.
  • Bring special wipes or lotions if your baby has sensitive skin.

Planning Your Look:

  • Choose a color palette. Soft pastels, light blues, pinks, creams, and grays are popular choices.
  • Think solids for parents and siblings. Busy patterns can be distracting. Opt for neutral colors and textures.
  • Shop the client closet (if available). Many photographers offer curated wardrobes to take the stress out of dressing baby.
  • Send photos of your outfits beforehand so your photographer can help plan the session.

Preparing Baby:

  • Loosen the diaper about 30 minutes before the session to avoid imprint marks.
  • Feed and burp baby right before. A full tummy equals a sleepy baby.
  • Apply lotion if your baby has dry skin.

Ensuring Sleep:

  • Keep baby awake for 30 minutes before the session. This will make them more likely to doze off during the shoot.
  • Sessions can last up to 3 hours. The studio will be warm (78-80 degrees) and quiet to promote sleep.
  • Silence phones and minimize distractions. Only bring essential family members.

Most Importantly, Relax!

Newborn photography is our specialty. We handle newborns with care and ensure a stress-free experience for both you and your little one.
